Monthly Post – Coding

Hi everyone,

The next post is Coding. I know that I wasn’t the best at coding or quite understood it, but I think I got the basics. I felt proud because I didn’t get what coding was but, I think it was fun getting to make things move according to what you put. What I learned was that the object or objects will follow what you put in. You make it move left or right at certain times so if you don’t put in the right way, it won’t go the way you wanted it to go. That’s one of the key things that I learned from that week. I think the game I did was fun because you tell the robot what to do when you are asked to. You will go through a series of tasks and you will help the robot through.  I am proud of myself because I don’t really do coding. I don’t quite get coding, but I feel that I got the hang of it.

I think that coding will be a big part of my life and so on because now everything is revolving around technology. So I think coding should be introduced to all schools. Our world is coming out with new technology, and I think we should know how to code and how to use it. Coding for me is hard because if you put the wrong code, it will follow what you put in. So if you make a mistake, it will only do what you tell it, so I have to visualize what I want the thing to go. It’s important to think ahead so you don’t make too many mistakes.

Coding is something that I think will be something forever. Something that creates something and it goes on and on. I think that coding at first is difficult because you need to get what you are trying to do and what each button does. But if you keep practicing, you will get the hang of it and it will be fun. I would like to get better at coding and hopefully become a bit of an expert.

That’s all for today,

Monthly Posts – Emoji Puzzle

Hi everyone,

The final post I will be talking about is Emoji Puzzle.  I really like making sentences with pictures or emojis. I feel there is another way of communicating with people but not using words. It was fun figuring out what Disney Movie to do and how to make it short but to the point. I really like how there are many emojis to use to create a sentence. Sometimes maybe a little too much emojis but I really liked that week’s challenge. I feel that making sentences with emojis is way more fun because that way others can guess. I think the past month was good and we will see what happens next.

I think that making a sentence with emojis is much easier than writing a sentence. I feel that it is much more fun creating a sentence with emojis because it’s another way of communicating with people. It allows you to express what you want to say but in a different more fun way, and creative way. You can use different colors and shapes. If you were to write a sentence with words, to me it’s not as fun using words. But when you use pictures, it’s fun to guess what is trying to be said.

Emojis are just more than pictures, they create words and express what the person is feeling or trying to say/express. When you use emojis, I feel that it is more kid friendly because they might get the emojis than words. Emojis are just fun to look at and it’s like a puzzle. I think that creating a sentence with emojis is easier to create and it doesn’t take that many emojis to make a sentence. I think we should use emojis more often.

Monthly Posts (2)

Hi everyone,

So this month I will be doing the same thing as last month but instead of 2 posts, I will be talking about 3 posts. The first post I will be talking about is Trimester One Portfolio. I was proud of what I accomplished in trimester one and I feel happy. I think I did well in all of the classes and I was just so proud of all the work that we did. The first subject I talked about was Language Arts (also Math, Science, and Social Studies). So we did this project called, “I Went Without Project.” We had to go without something for a whole week, I chose Netflix because I love watching it and I felt that I needed to stop for a while.

It was quite hard because I wanted to watch my favorite show. Which is “Hawaii 5-0.”  I really was hooked on watching the show but I think that it was a good lesson because we shouldn’t be on our devices 24-7. I feel that we are on our devices too much and we need to understand that we shouldn’t be reliant on them. We spend to much time on them and we should be enjoying time with family and friends. Even though I really love the show, I know that I shouldn’t be spending time on my phone watching Netflix. I am only talking about Language Arts because I feel that giving up something for a week is hard, but it’s an important lesson.

This was an important lesson for me and hopefully for my classmates is that you don’t need to always be on your device. Or be hooked on something because you have nothing better to do. There is always going to be something better to do like, going out with friends, hanging out with family, or getting ahead on homework. Don’t make that excuse, “I have nothing better to do, so just leave me alone please.” That is never the answer and I feel that I have learned my lesson and I am happy to be able to experience this.

That’s all for today,

Monthly Posts

Hi everyone,

It’s been a while since I’ve been blogging. But today, I have two blogs that were my favorite. The first one is SBC Week 8: Family Celebrations; Christmas Brunch. The second one is SBC Week 7: Performing Arts. The reasons why these two were one of my favorites to write because Christmas Brunch is one of those family gatherings that we usually don’t have often. Like every once a month or so. I also said in the blog, that I love the food, which I do. There are varieties of food, which I love because at least there are things that I like and things I need to try out. Most importantly, I get to spend time with my family. See my cousins, aunties, uncles, and grandparents. It’s just so much fun because again, spending time with the family, and seeing how much we’ve grown. They are just the most supportive and amazing. I wouldn’t trade them for anyone else. The best family ever.

Well, there is another blog to talk about and the reasons why I chose to add this to the blog. Like I stated in the blog, if you didn’t read it, you should go and read, please. But anyways, this first-ever time and I’m pretty sure it was in third grade. When we did a school play called, “Winnie the Pooh”. Which was directed by Cari Taira. She was an amazing person to work with. Go and check out their website Ohana Arts. So “Winnie the Pooh” was one, next was “Brave”.  I wouldn’t consider this a real play. I think almost like a showcase or like a recital, I’m not too sure. But it was also directed by Cari Taira. Next was “Honk Jr.!”. It was directed by Swaine Kaui. I was also in “Once On This Island Jr.”, and “High School Musical”. So he has a summer program called Stage Left!. So “Honk Jr.!” and “Once On This Island Jr.”  was his summer program. While “High School Musical”  was a school production.

I just love performing. Just seeing all your hard work pay off. Having fun, getting to know each other, and becoming a family. My favorite is makeup, I just love doing makeup. I know this wasn’t the most exciting post, but I’m happy and grateful for all of the opportunities in performing and having the best family ever. Their support is the most important thing that keeps me on performing. Like I said before, I don’t know what I would do without them. A big thank you to Cari Taira and Swaine Kaui, if it wasn’t for them, I don’t think I would be doing the thing I love right now.

Until then,

hmsshayann

SBC Week 10: Reflection

Hi everyone,

This is the last week of SBC. So today I will be writing a reflection. There are some questions and I have to ask a parent/relative.

  1. How many weeks of the challenge did you participate in?   I have started with challenge 3 and then progressed. I actually started with the first post called “My Message.”
  2. How many posts did you write in the ten week period? I have written 10 in all.
  3.  How many comments did you receive from classmates, teachers, or other visitors?  I have received 5 comments.
  4. Which post did you enjoy writing the most and why? I enjoyed writing “Trimester One Portfolio” because I was able to show the work that I am proud of and why. I felt proud because I felt like I accomplished a lot in the time I started school.
  5. Which web tools did you use to show creativity on your blog? I used Creative Commons and my own photos.
  6. What are your plans for your blog now? Will you keep posting? I will post here and there because I know I will be busy over Winter break but I hope that I will be able to post on my trip to Japan. I also know that we will have a ton of homework that will be handed every day.

Asking my grandparent

  1. What were your first impressions of this blog? – My grandpa said it looked very professional.
  2. What captured your attention? – The Student Blogging Challenge Logo on the right side.
  3. What distracted you on the blog? – The font size is too small to read and look at while scrolling through the blog.
  4. What suggestions can you give me to improve my blog? – If I could be able to fix my font and font size of my header page. It’s too small and the style could be more appealing.

That’s all for today,

SBC Week 9: Coding

Hi everyone,

Today I will be reviewing one of the coding games. The game is called Code Avengers. You will have to go through a series of tasks of coding. A restaurant wants to use a robot to do jobs, we need to code the robot to do the tasks that the owner wants it to do. There are instructions that tell what to do, but they don’t give exact numbers all the time. That’s when you need to figure out what you’re going to put. I had to code the pen in this case to write the letter “F” and “A”. If you don’t know how to put the correct labels in the spot, there is this lightbulb in the bottom right-hand corner. It’s kind of hard unless it’s just me because I don’t code on a daily base.

But I kind of got the hang of it. It’s really cool that the computer follows what you put down, so if it makes a mistake, you will need to fix. There are 5 tasks to finish. The “F” “A” is the sign for the restaurant. After you finish task 1, there will be a mini quiz about how many times you need to rotate 90 degrees and move 350 pixels. That was from the last task that you had to do to complete task 1. In task 2, there are more codes you need to put in at times. One of the codes is called, “Repeat ____ times” is a tool that will make your code repeat as many times that is needed.

In section 2, you will have to fix a traffic jam. The robot will have to make the cars go the right way so that there are no crashes. You will have to create lines to make the two lanes. The cars are supposed to follow them because well, that’s the rule when you drive. I thought that this game was very interesting even though I didn’t play on it for too long. We were instructed to on a game for at least 5 minutes. I’m glad that I was able to understand a little bit more about how to code what coding does.

That’s all for today,

hmsshayann

SBC Week 8: Family Celebrations; Christmas Brunch

Hi everyone,

So today, I will be talking about one of the celebrations that my family and I celebrate together. It’s Christmas Brunch. Every year, we all meet up at Orchids at Halekulani. If you’re wondering what Orchids at Halekulani is, it’s a restaurant located in Halekulani. Halekulani is a hotel located in Waikiki by the beach. The view of the ocean is so amazing. The restaurant is located right next to the ocean. So you can hear the ocean waves and smell the salty air. You could just walk right out and the ocean will be right there. But the bad thing is that it is an open concept. Which means that they don’t use A.C., they use fans and the breeze. It means that the flies are around, so you need to watch out for the flies. But the place is so amazing. The food over there is so good and plus, there is a buffet of different types of food there.

There is sushi, salad, turkey, ham, roast beef, roasted pig, popovers, omelet bar, fruits, desserts, and much more. Usually, my eyes are bigger than my stomach. Orchids have a wide selection for breakfast. Their breakfast menu has Japanese and American breakfast. The best thing about Christmas Brunch is, being able to see everyone at once. We hardly ever see each other unless it’s a family gathering. But sometimes I hang out with my cousin who is about 6 months younger than me.

There is also an ice cream bar. Oh boy, that’s one of the best parts. In the freezer, there is a wide selection of flavors of ice cream and they also have another table filled with all different kind of toppings. When it’s Christmas, there is this beautiful tree by the fireplace. It’s so amazing. We all take family pictures by it and the tree is decorated with many ornaments. My dad’s 3 other siblings take pictures with their own family. Then my dad siblings and he take pictures together and then all of the grandchildren take a picture. Christmas isn’t always about the presents, it’ about being with loved ones, having fun together, and most importantly, spending quality time as a family.

That’s all for today,

SBC Week 7: Performing Arts

Hi everyone,

So today I will be talking about one of the things I love to do, it’s performing arts. I just fell in love with it about 2 years ago. I guess I started to love it because, in third grade, we did Winnie Pooh. It was pretty fun. I had some lines, hair, a costume, and of course make-up. Either when I was in second going to third or when I was in third going to fourth, I did a performing type of thing. It wasn’t a play, but we sang and danced to many songs. The group that I joined was Ohana Arts. Co-founders Jenny Taira, Cari Taira, and Laurie Rubin have envisioned a place in Hawaii for youth to have high-quality training and performing opportunities with high;y accomplished and successful artists around the country. They aren’t lying, that was the most fun I had when I performed.

We sang songs and danced to it. But what was cooler was that there was a real band playing instead of the tape. It was so much fun! The second reason why I decided to love performing arts is because of my cousin. I would see her plays either at diamond Theatre or Mid-Pacific Institute. 2 summers ago, I was in another production called Honk Jr.! That was one of the most memorable summers ever. Even though this past summer, in my opinion, was way better. Anyways, Honk Jr.! was directed by Swaine Kaui. He is an amazing director. He has directed the past 4 plays and the play that I’m in right now. Besides Honk Jr.! he has also directed Aladdin Jr., Cinderella, Once On This Island Jr. and right now High School Musical.

High School Musical is going pretty well. The songs are coming along really well. I feel that I am getting better at dancing. I was never that great at dancing but I feel that I got a little better this past summer in Once On This Island Jr. and in High School Musical, there are harder moves to do. This is my well second school production. Honk Jr. and Once On This Island Jr. was a summer production called Stage Left. The many reasons why I love performing arts is because,

  1. It’s just so much fun, becoming a family and getting to know each other more.
  2. I love to sing, dance, and act.
  3. I love that we go through rehearsals because then we can see that we’re getting the staging and dances cleaner.
  4. When we perform, we are proud of all of our hard work.
  5. That feeling when I perform. I don’t know how to explain it. It’s like adrenaline and excitement.

That’s all for today,

Trimester One Portfolio

Hi everyone,

Today I will be showing you four pieces of my work form trimester one that I’m proud of. Some of the work will come from one class.

Language Arts:

I Went Without Project

I’m proud of this project for Language Arts because it showed me that I’m spending too much time on my phone and I need to cut down.  We needed to go without something for a week. For some of my classmates, it was hard, but for some it is was easy. For me it was hard. I chose to go without Netflix for a week. I love Netflix and my favorite movie is, “To All the Boys I loved Before”, and my favorite T.V show is, “Hawaii 5-0”. So it was hard for me. I watch 5-0 every day if I can. So going without it of a week was hard. But that project allowed me to understand, that I’m on my phone way too much. Either watching something or playing games and there are better things to do then be on my phone.  I chose this project because maybe this will inspire others that you can’t just be hooked on your device all day.

Direction Assignment

I chose this project because I felt that I was pretty descriptive on my instructions. I gave measurements and bolded in the important things that the other person might miss read. So we were given a paper in class, and our teacher told us that she will tell you what to draw. But, you can do it however you wanted and where it was going to be. For example, if she said to draw an oval, you can draw that oval anywhere, any color, and any size. It was all up to you. Then we were to write a set of descriptive instructions. Then she would give our instructions to another student n our class. But were instructed to not put our names. It was quite interesting because some people were so off and some weren’t.

Math:

Ocean Pollution and Marine Debris Project

I’m proud of this project for math because it made me realize that there is a lot of trash the is in the ocean. I worked on this project with hmskeldon. The ocean is home to many animals and coral. If we pollute their home, they will die and there won’t be any signs of their specific type of species. Plus, we won’t be able to have fish to catch or to eat. The fish that we eat can be contaminated with the polluted water that they came from. Oil spills have a lot to do with ocean pollution. The oil will kill and harm the animals and the coral. We need to take more action into cleaning up the beaches because the ocean grabs whatever is on the beach. So if there is a lot of trash on the beach, and the waves can touch it, then the trash will go into the ocean. I chose this project because I feel that others need to understand that Ocean Pollution and Marine Debris is very bad. That we need to stop it and help our oceans.

Social Studies:

Arrival of the Missionaries Poem

I chose this from social studies because I feel that hmsleilani and I worked well on this. I feel that we kind of got the hang of making poems. For me, I find it kind of hard to write poems because it’s hard to find words that rhyme with each other while staying on the topic.  But I find it easier to work with someone because then we can help each other out with finding the right word. Plus, you have someone to talk to and ask them if it sounds right. This poem is about what happened when the sailors came to Hawaii while the Missionaries were in Hawaii. How the sailors tried to burn the church. How the Hawaiian fought back.

That’s all for today,
