Trimester One Portfolio

Hi everyone,

Today I will be showing you four pieces of my work form trimester one that I’m proud of. Some of the work will come from one class.

Language Arts:

I Went Without Project

I’m proud of this project for Language Arts because it showed me that I’m spending too much time on my phone and I need to cut down.  We needed to go without something for a week. For some of my classmates, it was hard, but for some it is was easy. For me it was hard. I chose to go without Netflix for a week. I love Netflix and my favorite movie is, “To All the Boys I loved Before”, and my favorite T.V show is, “Hawaii 5-0”. So it was hard for me. I watch 5-0 every day if I can. So going without it of a week was hard. But that project allowed me to understand, that I’m on my phone way too much. Either watching something or playing games and there are better things to do then be on my phone.  I chose this project because maybe this will inspire others that you can’t just be hooked on your device all day.

Direction Assignment

I chose this project because I felt that I was pretty descriptive on my instructions. I gave measurements and bolded in the important things that the other person might miss read. So we were given a paper in class, and our teacher told us that she will tell you what to draw. But, you can do it however you wanted and where it was going to be. For example, if she said to draw an oval, you can draw that oval anywhere, any color, and any size. It was all up to you. Then we were to write a set of descriptive instructions. Then she would give our instructions to another student n our class. But were instructed to not put our names. It was quite interesting because some people were so off and some weren’t.

Math:

Ocean Pollution and Marine Debris Project

I’m proud of this project for math because it made me realize that there is a lot of trash the is in the ocean. I worked on this project with hmskeldon. The ocean is home to many animals and coral. If we pollute their home, they will die and there won’t be any signs of their specific type of species. Plus, we won’t be able to have fish to catch or to eat. The fish that we eat can be contaminated with the polluted water that they came from. Oil spills have a lot to do with ocean pollution. The oil will kill and harm the animals and the coral. We need to take more action into cleaning up the beaches because the ocean grabs whatever is on the beach. So if there is a lot of trash on the beach, and the waves can touch it, then the trash will go into the ocean. I chose this project because I feel that others need to understand that Ocean Pollution and Marine Debris is very bad. That we need to stop it and help our oceans.

Social Studies:

Arrival of the Missionaries Poem

I chose this from social studies because I feel that hmsleilani and I worked well on this. I feel that we kind of got the hang of making poems. For me, I find it kind of hard to write poems because it’s hard to find words that rhyme with each other while staying on the topic.  But I find it easier to work with someone because then we can help each other out with finding the right word. Plus, you have someone to talk to and ask them if it sounds right. This poem is about what happened when the sailors came to Hawaii while the Missionaries were in Hawaii. How the sailors tried to burn the church. How the Hawaiian fought back.

That’s all for today,

Core Classes – Math

Hey guys, it’s me hmsshayann, and today I will be talking about another core class which is Math.

I will be talking about a homework that I did and I was proud of. It was calcudoku, calcudoku is almost the same as sudoku but it is with numbers. All the rules apply to calcudoku, you can’t have the same number in the same row or column. At first, I thought this would be easy because you have to put the numbers once in a column and a row, but it wasn’t to me. There was a twist, the numbers were 1-9, and in so many boxes, there was an equation. So you had to put the numbers that equal that number that it is asking you to get. So, it took me so many tries that my dad had made the exact box on a google doc so I can do it and the paper that I was supposed to turn in, will look cleaner and it would be easier to read. I really enjoyed the challenge of doing the calcudoku. I’d like to do it again!

Here is a link to my work. Please click on these numbers.

Core Classes – Language Arts

Hey guys, it’s me hmsshayann, today I will be talking about one of my core classes and it is Language Arts.

I will be talking about one of the thing I did in LA class that I am most proud of. It was my essay about Alcatraz.

Did the Anglin Brothers make It?

Some people believe that the Anglin Brothers made it out of Alcatraz but, I am one of those people who don’t believe that they didn’t make it. Here is some history about the brothers. According to Legends of America, they were born into a family of 13 children. Sons of George Robert Anglin and Rachael Van Miller Anglin, that were seasonal farm workers. The brothers were bank robbers. In 1956, they were both arrested and given a 15-20 year sentences, and sent to Atlanta Penitentiary.

Later they were sent to the Florida State Prison and then to Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary in Kansas. When they tried to escape from Leavenworth, they were sent to Alcatraz with John arriving on October 21, 1960 and Clarence arriving on January 10, 1961. They began to plan an escape attempt with Frank Morris and Allen West. I don’t believe that the brothers made it out because investigators only found a raft.

Investigators only found a raft nearby Angel Island. According to Did You Know Facts, they also found a plastic bag that belonged to the brothers. It contained photos and addresses of friends and relatives. Authorities investigated the escape for 17 years, but never came up with any promising clues or information. Investigators also found a body floating by the bay but was never identified. The case was finally closed in 1979 and was declared dead.

I believe that the brothers died while paddling in the cold waters of San Francisco Bay. Investigators only found a raft but no one that used the raft. Also the family of the brothers claim that they went to Mexico, but I don’t know if that is really true because why would they tell investigators where they could have gone. I would think they wouldn’t say anything. I strongly don’t believe that the brothers made it and I don’t know if we will ever know if they made it out and survived the rough waters of San Francisco Bay.

I really liked doing this essay because it is mysterious so you can state your opinion.

Art and Choice Elective Costume Design

Hey, guys, it’s me hmsshayann and today I will be talking about Art and a choice elective that I have which Costume Design.

So this year, in art class, we get to do a project called Beauty of Hawaii. I was so excited to do this project because we can paint/draw anything that has to do with the Beauty of Hawaii. I decided to Waikiki Beach at night. It includes Diamond Head, sandy area, the water, and the shoreline. I was kind of excited to see what it would look like in the end. I included 2 dolphins and 2 surfers. Also, my sky was a dark ombre effect so was the ocean. I was proud of my art and I will never forget the Beauty of Hawaii.

For choice electives for trimester 2, I got Costume Design. I was excited because I can learn how to sew. It was even better because all the projects we are doing is for the play that is happening at my school, Cinderella. So we get to learn how to sew, iron, and more! It is so much fun because we get to make costumes for the actors in the play. And our teacher asked us if we wanted to help backstage. It would be so cool! But this Friday, it will be our last class for trimester 2, that means that we will have another choice elective. It was so much fun!

Until then, bye

Core Classes – Social Studies

Hey guys, it’s me hmsshayann, and today I will be talking about another core class which is Social Studies.

So this past week, we are learning about Ancient Japan. I think it is super cool to learn about Ancient Japan because I am a bit Japanese and I take a Japanese class after school. I find this section we are studying is super cool because we can learn about things that make up Japan today. But we have to figure out how Japan became Japan by studying about Ancient Japan. It can help us figure out things like for example, Taiko. I am doing a slide show about taiko. I am very excited to do Taiko because, in school, my class has to do Taiko Basics. It is very fun and we get to learn new patterns and more. I can’t wait to figure out what the other things that my classmates research about so I can learn more things about Japan and how it became the Japan we know today. I can’t wait to learn much more about Ancient Japan.

Until then, bye

Choice Electives – Community Service

Hey guys, it’s me hmsshayann, today I am excited to talk about the first choice elective I had.

So the first elective the I had was Community Service. I was a fun experience in this choice elective because me and the other’s got to take charge and plan some exciting events that will happen later on in the year. We got to even plan a game that will support Make-A-Wish Hawaii. It was in my other blog Quarter Games. I was so excited because we got to figure out what will happen later on in the year. I was happy because we got to see what Make-A-Wish Hawaii it was so cool. All the people who were at Make-A-Wish Hawaii were so nice and it was an amazing experience. We got to make posters for the Quarter Games and it was fun to make posters. I think that Community Service is a great thing to be a part of because you can help others out when it is needed and I think it is good to help others. I hope that I can do something like this again.

Until then, bye
